What’s the Difference Between Self-Esteem and Confidence; How Do I Improve Both?

Growth Mindset

Self-esteem and confidence are two words people use interchangeably, but in the therapy room they behave very differently. When a client sits down and tells me they “don’t feel confident,” what they often mean is something deeper, a quiet belief that they’re not enough. When someone says their “self-esteem is low,” what they often feel is a lack of confidence when they need it most.

The two are intertwined, feeding each other, shaping each other, and influencing the way we show up in the world. And the good news is this: both can change and usually much faster than people expect.

As a hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and someone who has spent years studying the psychology of influence and performance, I’ve seen the inside workings of these two powerful forces. Understanding the difference is the first step to transforming them.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is the quieter, deeper foundation. It’s the story you tell yourself about who you are and what you’re worth. Not out loud, internally and silent. It forms from childhood experiences, relationships, successes, failures, and the meanings you attached to all of them.

High self-esteem says:
“I matter. I’m worthy. I’m allowed to take up space.”

Low self-esteem whispers:
“I don’t think I’m enough.” “I don’t feel good about myself.”

When your self-esteem is strong, confidence becomes a positive factor in your daily life. When it’s not, confidence feels like walking on ice.

Where does Confidence Comes From?

Confidence is more situational. It’s how you feel about yourself in action in front of others, in challenging moments, or when you’re stepping into something new. You can be confident in one area (fitness, work, social situations) and unsure in another (speaking up, leadership, relationships).

Confidence grows from repetition, from success, from familiarity, but here’s the secret most people don’t realise: confidence also comes from self-esteem. If you believe you are fundamentally capable and worthy, confidence rises naturally. If you don’t, your confidence collapses the moment pressure appears.

It’s a pattern I see constantly in clients, brilliantly skilled people who crumble because the internal foundation isn’t strong enough.

How Hypnotherapy can Rebuild Confidence and Self-Esteem

Hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level, the place where self-esteem and confidence are stored, shaped, and replayed. We can update old patterns, soften internal criticism, and replace outdated beliefs with more accurate, empowering ones. NLP helps reshape internal dialogue, break limiting patterns, and build new emotional responses. Together, they create a powerful combination.

People often find that moments which used to trigger anxiety or doubt suddenly feel neutral. Situations they once avoided begin to feel manageable, even exciting. That’s because when you change the internal blueprint, the external behaviour changes automatically.

If you’ve ever struggled with self-sabotage, imposter syndrome, fear of rejection, or people-pleasing, this work is life-changing. These patterns don’t come from lack of intelligence or ability, they come from old emotional rules. Once those rules change, everything shifts.

There Is a Way

Improving self-esteem doesn’t mean becoming arrogant. Building confidence doesn’t mean pretending to be someone you’re not. It means aligning the inner world with the outer one. Feeling grounded in who you are. Trusting your abilities. Showing up fully.

I’ve helped so many people step into stronger self-belief, not in a loud, forced way, but in a calm, steady, quietly powerful way that transforms their life from the inside out.

If you’d like to strengthen your self-esteem, build real confidence, and finally feel like the best version of yourself, I’m here to help.
